On Friday 4th November the 1st Hungerford Scout Group held a celebration. Since July the Group has seen a number of changes thanks to its new Group Scout Leader, Roger Stroud.
With the help of the County and District Scout Teams we have recruited a new team of four to restart our Beaver colony, (thats Scouting for 5 to 8 year olds). We have also recruited a new Assistant Scout Leader and one new Cub Leader and Assistant Cub Leader.
Roger and his wife Marion have organised the complete clearance of the grounds, repainting of the main hall and foyer, replacing the foyer floor as well as designing and sourcing a new group necker and badge. Filling a skip with waste metal from the grounds and donations by local residents raised the group £90 too! The long awaited refurbishment and replacement of the toilets and sewage system has also been completed thanks to the skills and time given by one of our Scouting families; Mark, Stephanie, Jake and Tom Lambourn.
1st Hungerford has not only received tremendous support from the Scout Movement but also from the local Hungerford Community. On Friday evening we were delighted to be joined by Hungerford’s Mayor, Martin Crane, the Constable of the Town and manor, Greg Furr, Town and Manor Trustee Denis Cryer and Croft Hall Trustee Fred Bailey.
The highlight of our celebration was the investiture of our new leaders and the presentation of the new colour 1st Hungerford neckers and badge, all undertaken by the Kennet District Commissioner Alison Taylor. The neckers have been changed from pale blue to a bolder shade of blue with a gold edging, bringing it closer to the blue and gold used by the town of Hungerford.
The 1st Hungerford Scout Group has entered a new and very positive phase again under Roger’s guidance. We can now offer Scouting to all age groups from Beavers, through Cubs, to Scouts and Explorer Scouts. We are keen to recruit another Cub team and a new Scout leader (currently being run by Roger Stroud) and new Scouts and Explorers.
